The use of قَدْ ( qad ) and مَا ( maa )
The use of قَدْ ( qad )
The word قَدْ gives the meaning of ‘certainly/ verily/ indeed/ has/ have ‘. It is used before PAST PERFECT TENSE, i.e.:
وَقَدْ أَنزَلْنَا آيَاتٍ بَيِّنَاتٍ
And We have certainly sent down verses of clear evidence. ( 58:5 )
Sometimes an additional لَ ‘la’ is prefixed to it, which further emphasizes the meaning of the verb and it is written as لَقَدْ ‘laqad’, i.e.:
لَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا الْإِنسَانَ فِي أَحْسَنِ تَقْوِيمٍ
We have certainly created man in the best of stature; ( 95:4 )
The use of مَا ( maa ) for negation
In the past we learnt that the ‘maa’ is used to ask questions such as: ‘maa hadhaa?’ ( what is this? ), but today we will learn that the ‘maa’ is also used to negate an action.
Since we are focusing now on the verb, we should know that an action in past can be negated only by putting ‘maa’ before the verb, PICTURE 1.
So when we put the ما before a verb, we negate the action.
